President Obama’s own comments on his taxing of charitable giving was unapologetic at his press conference:
“I’ll tell you what has a significant impact on charitable giving, is a financial crisis in an economy that’s contracting. And so the most important thing that I can do for charitable giving is to fix the economy; to get banks lending again, to get businesses opening their doors again, and to get people back to work again. Then I think charities will do just fine.”
So let me see if I have this straight. While the economy is down and people are out of work and need charities more the president is saying tough – And his bright side is that when the economy is better, and less people will need the help of those charities, then charitable giving will increase – after the need is over?
